Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she developed the title-page artwork for the slipcase edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
This haunting composition presents an early study of one of the book’s most pivotal and emotionally charged moments—the flight of Severus Snape from Hogwarts after the murder of Albus Dumbledore. In the distance, silhouetted by moonlight, stands the Astronomy Tower, the very place where the act occurred. The foreground is dominated by the hooded figure of Snape, captured mid-escape, his identity veiled—both literally and narratively.
As this artwork was intended for the title page of the collector’s slipcase edition, GrandPré chose not to reveal the Half-Blood Prince’s identity outright. Instead, she relied on atmosphere, form, and suggestion, offering a visual prologue that rewards familiarity but also preserves mystery for first-time readers. The result is a sombre, cinematic image that encapsulates the darkness and betrayal at the heart of the sixth installment.
