This original preliminary pencil sketch was created by Mary GrandPré in 1999 as she developed the chapter title artwork for Chapter 23 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, titled The Yule Ball. The scene captures a quietly poignant moment as Harry and Ron reach the stone reindeer, gazing at the sparkling jets of a tall fountain. Nearby, the shadowy outlines of Hagrid and Madame Maxime can be seen seated on a stone bench, silently watching the water.

The Yule Ball, held on New Year’s Eve, is a longstanding tradition celebrating the Triwizard Tournament. Mary’s choice to illustrate this intimate moment emphasizes the emotional depth of the chapter, focusing on Hagrid’s revelation to Madame Maxime of his half-giant heritage. This interaction poignantly explores themes of identity and acceptance, as Madame Maxime bristles at Hagrid’s question about whether his giant traits come from his mother or father. While the chapter offers many vivid images, Mary’s depiction highlights the personal struggles faced by those who grow up different, a resonant message woven throughout J.K. Rowling’s narrative.
