This original pencil sketch was created by Mary GrandPré in 1999 as an early study for the title artwork of Chapter 31 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, titled The Third Task. It features one of the most memorable and mysterious moments in the chapter: the Sphinx, poised regally on her hind legs deep within the Triwizard Tournament maze.
After weeks of preparation and guidance from Ron and Hermione, Harry enters the final task of the Tournament—a sprawling, enchanted maze filled with magical obstacles. Among the most striking is the Sphinx, who offers Harry a chance to proceed only if he can answer her riddle. A wrong answer would provoke an attack; declining to answer at all would allow Harry to retreat unharmed. In a moment that showcases his bravery and intellect, Harry solves the riddle with the word “spider” and earns the right to continue.
GrandPré captures the tension and ancient elegance of the Sphinx in this initial rendering, which differs subtly in composition from the final illustration published in the book.
