Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 19 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Silver Doe.
This evocative sketch depicts the Silver Doe appearing in the Forest of Dean to guide Harry to the Sword of Gryffindor. After Harry and Hermione arrive at this familiar location, the luminous doe appears as Harry keeps watch, silently beckoning him to follow. The creature leads Harry to a frozen pond where, using Hermione’s wand to cast light, he discovers the sword hidden beneath the ice. This chapter holds deep significance, revealing that the doe is Professor Snape’s Patronus—casting a protective and guiding light for Harry. The silver doe, as the female counterpart to a stag, symbolically connects to Harry’s father, James Potter, whose Patronus was a stag.
J.K. Rowling herself emphasised the importance of this chapter, reading from it during a 2007 event at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre, months after the book’s release.
