Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 13 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, titled The Secret Riddle.
This poignant scene captures a young Tom Riddle—later known as Lord Voldemort—lying on his bed at Wool’s Orphanage as he awaits a visit from Albus Dumbledore. It is the first time Dumbledore encounters the boy destined to become the most powerful dark wizard of all time, though at this moment he remains unaware of Tom’s true identity and future.
Dumbledore later shows Harry this memory during their quest to uncover Voldemort’s troubled past, providing critical insight into his origins. As they return to Dumbledore’s office, the headmaster admits that at the time of the visit, he did not yet realise who Tom Riddle would become.
Mary GrandPré’s evocative sketch powerfully conveys the innocence and darkness entwined in this pivotal moment.
