Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 16 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, titled A Very Frosty Christmas.
This charming illustration focuses on a garden gnome perched atop the Christmas tree—not from the traditional angelic perspective, but rather the mischievous gnome that had bitten Fred Weasley on the ankle while he was pulling carrots from the garden for the holiday feast. Painted gold and dressed in a miniature tutu with wings, the gnome stands with arms crossed, casting a displeased glare over the festive celebrations below.
Mary GrandPré’s sketch captures the whimsical and humorous spirit of this unexpected holiday moment.
