Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 17 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, titled A Sluggish Memory.

This pivotal image illustrates the key memory involving a young Tom Riddle confronting Professor Horace Slughorn about Horcruxes, prompting Slughorn’s defensive and angry reaction. The sketch depicts the false memory initially given to Dumbledore—a critical plot point revealed when Harry, using Felix Felicis, secures the true memory from Slughorn.

Mary GrandPré’s artwork captures the tension and significance of this moment, integral to understanding Voldemort’s dark secret.
