Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 28 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, titled Flight of the Prince.
This powerful close-up captures Severus Snape moments after he has killed Albus Dumbledore and is about to flee Hogwarts with the Death Eaters. The flames of Bellatrix Lestrange’s fire at Hagrid’s hut burn ominously in the background. Snape’s expression is fierce and angry as he turns to confront Harry, who has just attempted to use one of Snape’s own spells against him. By this point in the story, Snape’s identity as the Half-Blood Prince is revealed, adding dramatic weight to the scene.
