Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2002 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 9 of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, titled The Woes of Mrs. Weasley. This poignant early composition captures the moment Ron and Hermione are appointed as prefects—an honour Harry, to his surprise and disappointment, does not receive.

After an isolating and frustrating summer at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place, Harry is already grappling with feelings of resentment, secrecy, and exclusion. His sense of alienation deepens when he learns that Ron and Hermione have been selected as prefects while he has not—despite everything he has endured at Hogwarts. The decision leaves Harry confused and disheartened, particularly as he believes his actions and sacrifices might have earned him the distinction. Dumbledore later reveals he felt Harry had “enough to be going on with.”

Mary GrandPré’s preliminary study conveys the emotional weight of this moment, subtly highlighting Harry’s internal turmoil as he watches his friends step into new roles of recognition and responsibility. The sketch offers a visual insight into the maturing dynamics of the trio, as well as Harry’s evolving relationship with authority and self-worth.
