This original preliminary pencil sketch was created by Mary GrandPré in 1999 as she developed the chapter title artwork for Chapter 24 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, titled Rita Skeeter’s Scoop. The illustration poignantly depicts an 11-year-old Hagrid carrying his father on his right shoulder, his crinkled black eyes beaming with warmth and affection.
Following the revelation in Chapter 23 that Hagrid is a half-giant on his mother’s side, Chapter 24 delves into Hagrid’s relationship with his father. Mary’s artwork captures this intimate bond by imagining a photograph-like moment of young Hagrid’s strength and love, carrying his father—a figure who tragically passed away during Hagrid’s second year at Hogwarts. This tender image adds emotional depth to Hagrid’s backstory, highlighting his resilience and family ties.
