Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 31 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Battle of Hogwarts.

This rare and evocative study depicts The Grey Lady, daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, who aids Harry in locating Ravenclaw’s lost Diadem—a Horcrux once belonging to her grandmother. Helena Ravenclaw, driven by jealousy, stole the Diadem and fled to Albania, hiding it in a forest. Later murdered by the Bloody Baron, who loved her, Helena reveals to Harry that she once confided this secret to Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort). It is this revelation that helps Harry understand how Voldemort acquired the Diadem to create a Horcrux.

This is the only artwork by Mary GrandPré depicting The Grey Lady.
