Preliminary Study for Chapter 30 Artwork, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2006)
Mary GrandPré (American, b. 1954)
Pencil on parchment tracing paper
Signed lower right: Mary GrandPré
25 cm x 19 cm
£5,000 (excl. VAT)

Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 30 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Sacking of Severus Snape.

This evocative artwork depicts a suit of armour brought to life by Professor McGonagall’s Piertotum Locomotor charm, guarding Hogwarts against invaders. Although the chapter features significant scenes involving Professor Snape and his dramatic escape, GrandPré made the deliberate artistic choice to avoid revealing too much. Instead of illustrating Snape himself, she focuses on this iconic enchanted suit of armour, symbolising the school’s defence and resilience.
