Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 23 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled Malfoy Manor.
This powerful preliminary sketch depicts Bellatrix Lestrange at Malfoy Manor, threatening Hermione with a dagger after realising in fury that Harry, Ron, and Hermione have entered her vault at Gringotts—where the Sword of Gryffindor is hidden. The scene captures the dark intensity of Bellatrix’s character, her wild black hair and fierce expression sharply contrasting Hermione’s youthful innocence. The dagger, a chilling element in the composition, is the weapon that ultimately fatally wounds Dobby the house elf. This raw, emotive image remained unchanged in the final published artwork, underscoring the chapter’s tension and danger.
