Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 33 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Prince’s Tale.
Arguably the most pivotal chapter in the entire series, this artwork captures a young Severus Snape alongside Lily and Petunia Evans, seen through Harry’s eyes within the Pensieve. In this chapter, readers uncover the full depth of Snape’s past and his true loyalties. Up until this moment, Snape’s allegiance remains ambiguous—whether he serves Voldemort or follows Dumbledore’s secret guidance. Having slain Dumbledore in the previous book, suspicion naturally falls on him, but this chapter reveals Snape’s enduring love for Lily Potter and his lifelong efforts to protect Harry, acting under Dumbledore’s orders. The scene evokes the innocence of their youth in a park, with Petunia in the background, underscoring the emotional weight of Snape’s memories and Harry’s realisation of what must be done.
