Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 12 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled Magic is Might.
This preliminary sketch depicts Hermione carrying a large framed portrait of Phineas Nigellus Black, which she intends to conceal inside her bag. Hermione realises that Phineas’s portrait in the Hogwarts headmaster’s office could be used by Severus Snape—the then headmaster—to spy on them by sending the portrait to Grimmauld Place. Hermione reassures that the portrait will be unable to see or hear anything once inside the bag. Notably, this image differs from the final artwork, where the portrait is replaced by an empty chair, reflecting the book’s description. Additionally, Hermione is shown wearing wizarding robes in the sketch, whereas in the final illustration she is depicted in Muggle clothing. This alteration represents one of the most significant changes between preliminary sketches and final chapter artwork in the series.
