Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2002 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 33 of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, titled Fight and Flight. The sketch captures a pivotal moment as Hermione and Harry lead Professor Dolores Umbridge deep into the Forbidden Forest—under false pretence and with dangerous consequences.
Moments before, Umbridge—having seized control of Hogwarts as High Inquisitor—was prepared to cast the Cruciatus Curse on Harry to extract information about his secret plans. In a moment of inspired improvisation, Hermione blurts out a fabricated story about “Dumbledore’s secret weapon,” leading the unsuspecting Umbridge into the forest. There, surrounded by towering trees and an increasingly tense atmosphere, they encounter the centaurs. Insulted by Umbridge’s arrogance, the centaurs retaliate, seizing her and dragging her away—allowing Harry and Hermione to escape and continue their urgent mission to the Department of Mysteries.
Mary GrandPré’s composition emphasises the looming forest and the unease of the encounter—Hermione’s bravery and quick thinking at its centre. The sketch balances tension and wit, capturing a moment that shifts the power dynamic and propels the story toward its climactic finale.
