Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 17 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled Bathilda’s Secret.
This powerful image portrays Godric’s Hollow as a ruin following the tragic events on Halloween night years earlier, when Voldemort murdered Harry’s parents. This momentous attack sets the tone for the entire series. The sketch reveals the destroyed right side of the house, the site of Harry’s bedroom and where Lily Potter was killed. The final published artwork closely follows this composition, featuring the snow-covered house framed by a wooded backdrop, evoking a haunting atmosphere.
