This original preliminary pencil sketch by Mary GrandPré was created in 2002 as an alternative study for the cover artwork of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, intended for the upper dust jacket wrap. The image offers a compelling close-up of Harry as he enters the door to the Department of Mysteries, accompanied by the ominous shadow of an evil hand—an evocative visual metaphor for Harry’s mysterious and dangerous psychic connection to Lord Voldemort.
In this instalment of the series, Harry discovers his unique ability to see into Voldemort’s mind, a connection that isolates him even from allies like Dumbledore, who fears the Dark Lord may exploit this link. This sketch masterfully captures the tension and foreboding inherent in that relationship, emphasising the psychological and emotional stakes of the narrative.
Provenance & Condition
The artwork is in excellent condition, showing minor wear and gentle creasing consistent with the artist’s creative process. It has been professionally preserved and archivally mounted on museum-quality board with protective mats and cover.
Note
This piece represents a rare insight into Mary GrandPré’s early creative exploration of key themes from the series and remains a significant example of her defining contribution to the visual identity of the American Harry Potter editions.
