Created in 2006, this original preliminary pencil sketch by Mary GrandPré represents one of two alternative concepts explored for the cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the climactic conclusion to the series. In this concept, Harry is shown draped in his Invisibility Cloak—later revealed to be one of the three legendary Deathly Hallows—hovering above the chaos of the Battle of Hogwarts.

Framed by the Forbidden Forest on one side and the towering silhouette of the castle on the other, Harry is positioned centrally and surrounded by visual references to all three Hallows: the Cloak, the Resurrection Stone, and the Elder Wand. The title "Harry Potter" appears in GrandPré’s iconic original font, with the subtitle gently curving around Harry’s figure, unifying the design.

Though ultimately not chosen for the final dust jacket—GrandPré opted instead for a direct depiction of Harry’s final confrontation with Voldemort—this study stands out as the only known artwork that visually brings together all three Hallows alongside the climactic battle. It was created as a working concept for the upper dust jacket wrap.

Provenance & Condition
The artwork remains in excellent condition, with light surface creasing and minor wear consistent with the artist’s working process. Professionally preserved and archivally mounted on museum-quality board with protective mats and cover.

Note
This rare concept piece provides a unique lens into GrandPré’s interpretive process at the end of the series, blending thematic symbolism with narrative intensity. It is a key example of her vision in shaping the enduring visual identity of the American editions.
