Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 25 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled Shell Cottage.
Following the tragic death of Dobby the house elf, Harry retreats to the clifftops near Shell Cottage to contemplate his next move. This poignant, solitary image of Harry captures a rare moment of introspection and vulnerability, as he wrestles with the decision to delay pursuing the Elder Wand. Mary GrandPré’s artwork remained faithful to this theme from preliminary sketch to final chapter illustration. J.K. Rowling has emphasized in interviews that Harry’s choice to pause and reflect marks a crucial stage in his emotional growth—an aspect thoughtfully portrayed in this piece, making it a powerful representation of the chapter’s tone.
