Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 36 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Flaw in the Plan.

The final chapter artwork in the Harry Potter series—excluding the epilogue—depicts a seemingly lifeless Harry Potter cradled in Hagrid’s arms as he is carried from the Forbidden Forest toward Hogwarts Castle. J.K. Rowling has revealed in later interviews that this poignant image was always in her mind and played a key role in preserving Hagrid’s safety throughout the series. The scene echoes the beginning of Harry’s journey, when Hagrid first delivered him from Godric’s Hollow to the Dursleys, and now brings him back to Hogwarts once again. This preliminary sketch closely mirrors the final chapter artwork, capturing the emotional weight of the moment with remarkable clarity.
