Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2002 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 36 of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, titled The Only One He Ever Feared. This dramatic composition captures the legendary battle between Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort inside the Ministry of Magic—one of the most climactic and visually arresting scenes in the entire Harry Potter series.
This confrontation is the first time readers witness the two greatest wizards of the age in direct magical combat. In a stunning duel of elemental force and precision, Dumbledore confronts Voldemort in the heart of the Department of Mysteries, protecting Harry and confirming to the world that the Dark Lord has indeed returned. The chapter’s title refers to the deep fear Voldemort holds for Dumbledore—alone among the wizarding world.
GrandPré’s early rendering differs in composition from the final artwork featured in the book and the dust jacket—it presents a mirrored or reversed perspective, giving collectors a unique insight into the development of one of the most iconic illustrations of the series.
