£5,500 (excl. VAT)

Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 3 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Dursleys Departing. This sketch was reversed for the final image in the book.

This artwork captures one of the most poignant moments in the Harry Potter series—Harry shaking hands with Dudley as the Dursleys prepare to leave Number 4, Privet Drive. After much deliberation, the Dursleys decide to accept the Order of the Phoenix’s offer of protection. When two Order wizards arrive, Dudley expresses his wish to go with them, prompting his family’s decision. Dudley wonders why Harry isn’t joining, to which Uncle Vernon replies that Harry doesn’t want to—and Harry agrees. Just before leaving, Dudley turns to Harry, offering a handshake and expressing his gratitude, acknowledging that Harry saved his life two summers prior and that he no longer thinks of him as a “waste of space.” This is the first instance in the series where any of the Dursleys show genuine appreciation toward Harry. The family’s car is visible in the background, adding context to the farewell.
