Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 6 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, titled Draco’s Detour.

In this pivotal chapter, Harry, Ron, and Hermione visit Fred and George’s new joke shop, Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, in Diagon Alley, a rare bright spot amid the growing darkness in the wizarding world marked by deaths and disappearances, including that of Igor Karkaroff. While there, the trio spots Draco Malfoy and stealthily follows him under the invisibility cloak into Knockturn Alley, where he visits Borgin & Burkes—a notorious dark magic shop.

Through the Weasley’s extendable ears, they overhear Draco reserving an item and inquiring about repairs—revealed to be a vanishing cabinet. He then threatens the shop owner, an act laden with ominous significance for later events. Mary GrandPré’s artwork captures Draco standing before a mirror, his expression stern and determined, encapsulating the dark path he is embarking upon.
