Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2004 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 19 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, titled Elf Tails.

This artwork depicts the moment Harry instructs the house-elves Kreacher and Dobby to secretly follow Draco Malfoy and report back, without alerting Draco to their presence. Having inherited Kreacher from his uncle, a member of the Black family, Harry understands the magical bond compelling Kreacher’s obedience. Despite Kreacher’s preference for Draco as his master, he complies with Harry’s orders, aided by Dobby’s loyal companionship.

Mary GrandPré’s illustration captures the subtle tension and secrecy of this crucial scene.
