Original preliminary pencil sketch on paper created by Mary GrandPré in 2006 as she prepared the title artwork for Chapter 28 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, titled The Missing Mirror.
This artwork portrays Ariana Dumbledore’s portrait in the house of Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus’s brother, located in Hogsmeade. In the chapter, Aberforth agrees to aid Harry, Ron, and Hermione by granting them secret access to Hogwarts. Ariana’s portrait mysteriously disappears down a hidden passage and returns accompanied by someone. The portrait then swings open to reveal Neville Longbottom, who has used the secret passageway to enter the school. Mary GrandPré captures this pivotal moment of transition and secrecy with subtle detail and atmosphere.
